Project Description:
The UNCW Center for Marine Science (CMS) invites North Carolina artists and craftspeople to submit their qualifications to create artwork for a lobby art installation with a coastal or marine theme/feel.
The selected artist will be paid for their approved design, fabrication and installation of art piece, with payment commensurate with size and medium of final installation. The deadline to submit application materials is April 02, 2024 by 11:59 p.m. EST. There is no fee to apply. Artists of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Please do not submit design proposals.
Project Overview:
The project goal is for the selected artist to create a design that enhances the visual appeal of the CMS lobby while not competing with already-installed design, architectural and technology elements. The art must also assist with acoustics in this space (sound absorption, sound diffusion), as it is used for meetings and events. The approximate available project space is 39 feet wide x 11 feet tall, but the installed design will not necessarily need to fill that entire space.
Eligibility and Qualifications:
Visual artists living and/or working in North Carolina are eligible to apply. Emerging artists and historically underrepresented artists are encouraged to apply. The selected artist will be required to register as a vendor with the university.
Application Process:
Eligible artists are invited to submit their application materials for this open call. There is no fee to apply. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT DESIGN PROPOSALS.
Please submit:
- Five (5) images of recently completed original artwork (jpg, png or pdf, size max: 2MB) relevant to this project. For each image, you’ll be asked to include: medium, dimensions, year, budget, commissioning agency (if applicable)
- Statement of interest (1 page max, PDF only) explaining why this project is of interest and how you might conceptually/aesthetically approach the project
- Resume or CV of relevant experience (2 pages max, PDF only)
2-3 professional references (name, title, organization, email address)
Scope of Work:
UNCW CMS will provide detailed design specifications to the selected artist. The selected artist will then develop and submit a conceptual proposal including: images/sketches of proposed art and a mockup showing the art in the project space. The conceptual proposal will be reviewed and the committee will provide feedback on the design. The selected artist will then provide final designs addressing committee feedback. Once the design is finalized, the selected artist will fabricate and install the design. Installation assistance may be available.
